The largest man-made freshwater Lake is situated in the Kaptai upazila in Rangamati district of Chittagong hill tracts. It is the biggest Lake of Bangladesh. Though it is created mostly for hydroelectric power generation, it contributes to produce significant quantity of freshwater fishes, navigation, flood control and agriculture, etc. The reservoir was created by damming the river karnafuli near kaptai town in the Chittagong hill tracts. The lake is restricted within the hill district Rangamati and embraces the upazilas of Rangamati Sadar, Kaptai, Nannerchar, Langadu, Baghaichhari, Barkal, Belaichhari and Juraichhari. The 'H'-shaped Kaptai Lake has two arms, joined by a narrow gorge Kaptai Lake, the largest "man-made" lake, spreading over 680 sq. km. of crystal-clean water flanked by hills and evergreen forests lays in the Rangamati Hill District. The lake was formed when the Karnaphuli river dam (153 feet high, 1800 feet long crest) was built for the reason of hydroelectric power project at Kaptai. The old Rangamati town was submerged under lake water and a new town had to be built later. The lake is full of fish and provide facilities for cruising, swimming and skiing. There are also facilities for short trip by country boats.
The important information for the foreign tourists to the Hill Districts prior permission from the Government is required which can be arranged through Bangladesh Porjaton Corporation.
